Famous Floridian Day May 15th

Fourth Grade - Famous Floridian Day – 2012

Each student will be researching a “Famous Floridian!” Some of these individuals were not necessarily born in Florida. However, every person that was chosen did make a significant impact on the state of Florida. That major impact is what you will be focusing on for this project. Everyone in the class will pick a “Famous Floridian.”

On your presentation day:

1 - Every student is going to dress up like their “Famous Floridian.”

2 - Every student is going to create a poster on their “Famous Floridian.”

3 – Every student will make a presentation on their “Famous Floridian.”

The poster board should include, but is not limited to, the following:

Ø The name of your “Famous Floridian”

Ø Where they were born/when they moved to Florida/what city they lived in

Ø When they were born/when they died (some may still be alive)

Ø What was their life like/what was their career

Ø What was their major contribution to Florida

Ø How did that contribution impact Florida

Ø Provide at least 10 fun facts on your “Famous Floridian”

Ø Provide as many pictures as you want on your poster (these can come from the internet or you can neatly illustrate – include color). **You need at least one picture of your person.

On your presentation day, each student will dress up like their “Famous Floridian.”They will present their poster on their “Famous Floridian” and be prepared to give a short 2-5 minute presentation on their person. Students may use 3x5 index cards to assist them (not directly read). However, all students should be well prepared and have rehearsed (several times) at home.

Our Famous Floridian Day will be held on:Tuesday, May 17th.

Have fun researching your “Famous Floridian!” Be as creative as possible!
** Remember that the entire presentation should be a minimum of 2 minutes long and a maximum of 5 minutes long.

Dear Parents,

I have just sent home the foresight scores.  These scores are a predictor score and they show your child's progress.  Please sign the paper they wrote the scores on.

Thank you!

MATH BEE

Dear Parents,

On the first week of April, the students are going to be having a math bee in the classroom.  The top 5 from each class will be competing in a formal math bee (probable date: April 9th).  Many students already know the vocabulary words from this year.  I gave each student a packet of vocabulary terms last week that they can practice and study with.  Here is a quizlet site that has some additional words.

I also wanted to include the words to the song we have been singing in class (another great source of vocabulary for math).

Benchmark Folders

Dear Parents,

I have sent home with your child a folder containing Benchmark test scores.  I have explained to them what they mean.  There are 18 objectives that are tested on the benchmark.  Your child has a folder that lets you know whether they mastered the objectives or not.  If they have not mastered the objectives there will be a check by the box marked critical area.  For every check you child has there is a review paper that goes with it.  I also put a dot by areas that are not considered critical (but the dot means they did not master that skill completely.)  There is no paper for the dotted items in the folder but if your child completes their folder early, and they want to work on the dotted items; I can get them those pages as needed.

This week's homework is to complete the first 5 benchmarks-- pages in the folder.  Those pages are not due until Friday March 2.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Janosik

St Augustine Scrapbook

Saint Augustine Scrapbook Project

Due: January 5, 2012 (Thursday)

Directions: Create a scrapbook with at least four 8 ½ by 11 pages or eight 4 x 6 pages. You may use a real album or staple two sheets of copy paper between two sheets of construction paper. The scrapbook should show what you have learned about Saint Augustine and its importance to Florida’s history. Your scrapbook should include the following:
 At least one page about a famous person that lived in Saint Augustine.

 At least two pages about historical places in Saint Augustin
 One page that gives information about the location and history of the city.

 You may use real pictures, pictures from magazines or brochures, pictures from the internet, or drawings.

 Each page should also have journaling or written information.

IMPORTANT: The students need to put the information into their own words. In other words, this is not an exercise in copying off the Internet. I would like them to put their own "Voice" to the project. For instance, if something historical happened in St. Augustine 550 years ago then they might begin with...Did you know that 550 years ago... or Who would have ever thought that an argument about who should supply wheat to people in St. Augustine would start a war?

If the students plagarize or copy without paraphrasing, they will get their paper back with a note to Re-Do within 3 days or receive a zero. They cannot just cut information out of a brochure and think they are done.
I'd like to see the students keep this project for their own children so encourage them to use their best creativity and judgment in making something memorable. A keepsake if you will.

Thank you!
